 Later we went to see
the evening prayers at Rishikesh Ashram on the Ganges
River near a statue of Shiva. First we took a boat
ride on the Ganges River.
|
 Then
we arrived at the prayer sight, took off our
shoes and went down the stairs to the river bank of the Ganges where
services are held.
Boys wearing orange robes and wooly caps sat in rows on the steps. Everyone was chanting in
Sanskrit.
|
There was musical accompaniment, drums and other
instruments. Some sat around a fire and threw some form of
accelerant into the fire which
sparked the flames. They did this in unison during the appropriate lines
of the prayers.
|
The music stopped and oil lamps were lit.
|
 The
prayer chants continued, but this time oil lamps were held and swayed and
then passed around so that everyone had a chance to hold the
lamps. Flower pedal arrangements wrapped in banana leaves were
lighted and...
|
set adrift in the river to be carried downstream.
Then it was back to our hotel in the little auto rickshaws.
This one was painted like a New York City taxi.
